Boston was founded in 1630 by English Puritans fleeing religious persecution. Boston's harbor and geographical position made it a natural for shipping and ocean-going commerce. In 1631 the first sailing ship built in America was launched from Boston and soon the shipbuilding industry thrived.  For nearly a century Boston was the leading shipbuilding city, with a prosperous whaling and fishing industry. As that trade began to be restricted by Britain, along with other events, rebellion began to build, eventually culminating in the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 18, 1775.
