Scituate
Scituate Harbor is a true New England harbor with picturesque views. Many fine dining restaurants and specialty shops to explore can be found within short walking distance from the harbor.
Scituate Lighthouse, is one of the oldest lighthouse in the United States with attached living quarters. It is also the legendary site of the “Lighthouse Army of Two”, where in the War of 1812, the lighthouse keepers two young daughters sighted a British warship anchored in the harbor. The two sisters hid and loudly played a fife and drum. The British thought this was a signal to the town militia and retreated.
Scituate is home to many Historical sites as well. At the Maritime and Irish Mossing Museum, located in a 1739 sea captain's home, you can investigate artifacts from the captains of the house, and learn about the local maritime history of the area, Scituate shipwrecks, the history of shipbuilding along the North River, and the story of Irish mossing. Other historic sites to explore include Lawson Tower, Stockbridge Mill, and Mann Farmhouse and Museum.
Fishing along the Atlantic Coast or from the many ponds and rivers located here will fill any fisherman's heart. Head over to Musquashcut Pond if you're looking for white perch, rock bass or Atlantic salmon, or find your way to The Hazards, a bar off the coast, where you will find pumpkinseed, northern pike and sturgeon. If deep sea fishing is more your style, you will find cod, striped bass, and tuna as you head out from this area.
Golfers can enjoy a round at Widow's Walk Golf Course. This 18 hole course along the North River was designed around the natural resources of the area. The layout, bunkers, water, and hills add to the challenges of this course. Or visit the Scituate County Club for a challenging 9 holes within a beautiful setting surrounded by trees and river.
