Boston History
Boston was founded in 1630 by English Puritans fleeing religious persecution. Boston's harbor and geographical position made it a natural for shipping and ocean-going commerce. In 1631 the first sailing ship built in America was launched from Boston and soon the shipbuilding industry thrived. For nearly a century Boston was the leading shipbuilding city, with a prosperous whaling and fishing industry. As that trade began to be restricted by Britain, along with other events, rebellion began to build, eventually culminating in the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 18, 1775. To experience the rich history of America's Revolution there is no better place, as Boston was the site of the Boston Tea Party, the Boston Massacre, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and Paul Revere’s midnight ride.
The Freedom Trail chronicles American Revolutionary history with 16 historically significant sites along the trail that includes the Old State House, the home of Paul Revere, the USS Constitution, the Bunker Hill Monument, and Faneuil Hall, as well as, burial grounds, meeting houses, and historic markers.
Boston "firsts" include: the first public school in the United States, Boston Latin School; the first public library, Boston Public Library; the first public park, The Boston Common; and, the first subway, Tremont Street, as well as many others. |
