Boston Arts and Culture
Theater
The Theater District, south of Boston Common, contains a number of theatres, including the Boston Opera House, the Cutler Majestic Theatre and The Citi Performing Arts Center. The American Repertory Theater in Cambridge and the Huntington Theatre are professional theatre companies, with many smaller companies and theatres, such as the Boston Center for the Arts, dispersed throughout the city. The Boston Ballet is a world-renowned classical dance company. The Commonwealth Shakespeare Company performs on the Boston Common each summer and a variety of street performers can be found throughout the city.
Music
Boston is home to a wide array of music including the world-renowned Boston Symphony Orchestra, the famed Boston Pops, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, the Boston Philharmonic, and the Handel and Haydn Society (the oldest choral company in the U.S.). Major venues include Jordan Hall, Symphony Hall, and the Berklee Performance Center. Several important music schools are located in Boston, including the New England Conservatory, the Boston Conservatory, and the Berklee College of Music.
Visual Arts
Boston has over 40 museums dedicated to the visual arts, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the National Museum of Afro-American Art. The Boston Sculptors Gallery is one of only a handful of cooperative sculpture galleries in the country. Newbury Street, in the Back Bay district, has an abundance of art galleries. The Boston Public Library and the Boston Atheneum each have large collections of art, books, and research materials, and regularly host cultural events and exhibits.
