Boston Annual Events Share


Boston hosts a number of special annual events throughout the year.

The Boston Marathon, held each year on Patriots Day, is one of the oldest and most prestigious marathons in the world with over 25,000 participants and 500,000 spectators. The legendary course, known for its level of difficulty, includes a series of hills throughout the 26 mile route that runs from Hopkinton to Boston.

First Night Celebration in Boston is the oldest and largest New Year's Eve celebration of this type. A cultural and art showcase for artists, musicians, and performers, the day is filled with indoor and outdoor theatre, dance, music, visual art, and film venues to enjoy. The day long celebration also includes the Grand Procession, a mardi-gras style parade down Boylston Street to the Boston Common, huge ice sculptures in Boston Common, and midnight fireworks over Boston Harbor. 

Boston Harborfest is week long Independence Day celebration that embraces Boston's history. Throughout the week there are over 200 events taking place in Boston's historic downtown and waterfront district including historic reenactments and historical tours. The festivities culminate on 4thof July on the Charles River Esplanade with a Boston Pops Orchestra concert and a spectacular firework display.  Chowderfest, where Boston restaurants vie for the title of best local chowder, is also a part of this event.

St. Patrick's Day Parade, in this most Irish of cities, has colorful floats, music, marching bands, and pipe bands. After viewing the parade, take a walk along the Irish Heritage Trail. Starting at the Rose Kennedy Garden and following along the waterfront to the Back Bay, this 3 mile self-guided trail showcases 16 sites that celebrate the Irish heritage of Boston, dating back to colonial times.

The Boston Wine Expo is the largest trade and consumer wine event in the country, with more than 300 wineries offering wines to sample. In addition, celebrity chefs demonstrate their skills and share their recipes. Wine lovers can learn through seminars, food pairings, and tastings, and enjoy a “meet and greet” with the wine makers. 

The Jazz Festival, a week long event that celebrates the new, while honoring the old, traditions of jazz. This event offers 230 free and low-cost events at over 80 venues featured throughout the city. During this week some of the most popular area restaurants also participate in the Chefs Jam for Jazz, offering jazz-inspired dishes at special prices.

Head of the Charles Regatta is the world's largest 2-day rowing event. Held each October with more than 8,000 rowers competing in 55 different races. Races are mostly three miles long, with the rowers racing against the clock and each other. The winners of each race are given the honorary title of “Head of the Charles”.

Boston Arts Festival, a 3-day celebration that takes place in Christopher Columbus Park along Boston's waterfront. Artist exhibit and sell works of art and performances take place on two water front stages. This festival features some of the best of Boston's visual and performing arts.

Beacon Hill Art Walk when local residence of the Beacon Hill area allow artist to display and sell their artwork in the alleyways, courtyards, and hidden gardens of their homes. This unique display is accompanied by area musicians playing live music ranging from classical to folk.

New England Sand Sculpting Festival takes place each July on nearby Revere Beach. Sculptures are given 10 tons of sand and 24 hours over several days to complete their work. Visitors can view these enormous and detailed sculptures gallery-style while strolling along the beach's walkway.
